The Smart City Mission (SCM), initiated by the Government of India on June 25, 2015, is a pioneering urban development endeavor. Envisaged to transform 100 cities across the nation, this centrally sponsored scheme collaborates with State Governments to create urban spaces that offer essential infrastructure, a high quality of life, and a sustainable environment. Thanjavur, selected in the second round of the Smart City Challenge on September 20, 2016, is one of Tamil Nadu’s 11 smart cities.
Following the Area-Based Development (ABD) retrofitting model, Thanjavur’s identified 2.6 Sq.Km old city area, surrounded by a moat on three sides and a railway line on the south, will undergo intensive infrastructure development and smart solutions. Additionally, a city-wide implementation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) based smart solutions is integral to the Pan-city development approach. Thanjavur Smart City’s proposed projects, totaling 1289.5 crores, span diverse sectors like tourism, green spaces, economic development, urban transport, water supply, sewerage, and roads/non-motorized transport (NMT).
Given Thanjavur’s rich cultural and historical significance, the smart city vision extends beyond infrastructure to enhance its identity as the “Cultural Capital of Tamil Nadu,” emphasizing resilience, sustainability, and inclusive development.
