Thanjavur is an important pilgrim centre and a major tourist destination of Tamil Nadu. South Zone Culture Centre in Thanjavur is one of the regional cultural centres established by the Government of India to preserve and promote cultural heritage of India. There were 2,002,225 Indian and 81,435 foreign tourist arrivals in 2009 to Thanjavur. The most visited monument in Thanjavur is the Brihadeeswarar Temple, whose construction, the historian Percy Brown described as “a landmark in the evolution of building art in South India”. Built in the 11th century by the Chola king Raja Raja Chola I (985–1014), the temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The walls of the sanctum are covered with wall paintings from the Chola and Nayak periods. The temple was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It is replicated in the Gangaikonda Cholesvarar Temple constructed by Raja Raja’s son Rajendra Chola I (1012–44).

Thanjavur Maratha Palace

The Thanjavur Maratha Palace was the official residence of the Bhonsle family who ruled over the Thanjavur region from 1674 to 1855. It was originally constructed by the rulers of the Thanjavur Nayak kingdom and after their fall, it served as the official residence of the Thanjavur Marathas. When most of the Thanjavur Maratha kingdom was annexed by the British Empire in 1799, the Thanjavur Marathas continued to hold sway over the palace and the surrounding fort. The southern side of the third quadrangle of the palace has a 190 ft (58 m) tower-like building, called the Goodagopuram.

Saraswathi Mahal Library

The Saraswathi Mahal Library, established around 1700 and located in the premises of the palace, contains over 30,000 Indian and European manuscripts written on palm leaf and paper. Over eighty per cent of its manuscripts are in Sanskrit and many of them are on palm leaves. The Tamil works include treatises on medicine, and commentaries on Sangam literature. The Rajaraja Chola art gallery is located inside the palace – it has a large collection of stone and bronze images from the ninth to 12th centuries. Most of the idols present in the gallery were collected from various temples in the Thanjavur district.

Sivaganga Park

The Sivaganga Park is situated to the east of the Brihadeeswarar Temple and encompasses the Sivaganga Tank believed to have been built by the king Raja Raja Chola. It was created as a people’s park by the Tanjore municipality in 1871–72. It has a collection of plants, animals and birds and serves as a zoo for children within the city.

Rajarajan Mani Mandapam

Manimandapam is located in the southern part of the Thanjavur area. This structure was constructed during the Eighth World Tamil Conference held in 1995. The ground floor of this manimandapam houses a museum owned by the state archaeology department. The Tourism promotion council, under the chairmanship of the District collector, manages the park in side of the Manimandalam.

Stem Park

As part of the Smart City mission Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Park was created to provide children with practical experience in understanding scientific topics. With more than 100 topics presented in an entertaining and engaging manner, STEM Park offers a variety of zones, including science, maths, and space. Each show in the planetarium may accommodate up to 30 people. A thorough explanation is included with each experiment. For students to have an experiential understanding of their academic subjects, it is an essential site to attend. It is located in arulananda nagar. The STEM park is open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Mullivaikkal Muttram

The Mullivaikkal Memorial, also known as Mullivaikkal Muttram, honors the Tamil civilians who were killed at Mullivaikkal in 2009 during the closing stages of the conflict between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the Sri Lankan military.The Mullivaikal Memorial is located in the Tamil Nadu state of neighboring India’s Villar bypass, next to Bon Secours College for Women in the Thanjavur District. The inaugural ceremony for the Mullivaikal Memorial was held on November 6, 2013. The founders are Pazha Nedumaran, a Tamil leader, and the World Tamil Confederation Trust, which he leads.

Samudram Lake Park

The Samudram Lake, located in the Puliandoppu area near the Mariamman Temple in Thanjavur district, has now become a popular recreational spot for the people of Thanjavur. The lake, recently renovated and reopened, features newly constructed walkways where people can enjoy the sunset while strolling. The lake, which resembles the sea, captivates visitors with the colors of the setting sun. The lake has been deepened, its capacity increased, and its banks reinforced. It now includes various recreational features such as boat rides, a children’s playground, a kids’ park, walkways, lawns, seating areas for visitors, drinking water facilities, restrooms, parking spaces, and three islands for birds to roost.

Manora Fort

Situated at the Sarabendraraja Pattinam, the stronghold neglects the Cove of Bengal in the Thanjavur locale of Tamil Nadu. Poondi Madha Basilica

Situated in the pastoral surroundings of Poondi village, Poondi Madha Basilica was elevated to the status of minor basilica on August 3, 1999.  The shrine’s massive building combines French and Gothic architectural styles. The row of statues representing Jesus Christ’s twelve disciples is the main feature of the building. In addition, the Poondi Madha Basilica houses a relic of the original cross, often known as the real cross—the one on which Christ was crucified.

Tamil University Museum

The Tamil University Museum, located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, is a significant museum since it houses artifacts from antiquity. It was founded in 1983 with the intention of being a multiuse museum. The items on display for visitors to view in the museum include artifacts from various cultures, Indus Valley replicas, jewelry, burial urns, coins, sculptures, bronze images, wood carvings, arms, models of modern paintings, the Chellinar house, utensils, and knives.

Rajali’s Birds park

Rajali Birds Park is the 1st such exotic bird sanctuary in thanjavur region. A private collection of birds settle here for the first time. At the aviary, there are 15 exotic birds, 7 exotic rodent species, ball python, ferret, iguana, bearded dragon, and hedgehog. One of the most eye-catching birds at the park is the Ruby Red Macaw, a beautiful, brilliantly coloured bird from the family of parrots. The macaw makes a screeching sound as it flies, mimicking human voice, and love birds. Another of the exotic birds is the Sun Conure, a medium sized yellow bird of South America. The rainbow lorikeet, a sweet-nosed parrot with multi-coloured plumage, from Australia, feasts on slices of pomegranates, guavas, and water melons served on plates to visitors.

Punnai Nallur Mariamman Temple

The Punnai Nallur Mariamman Temple, a Hindu temple, is located in Thanjavur, Tamilnadu, India. The shrine honoring the goddess Mariamman is among the most well-known temples in the Thanjavur District. There is a prominent temple dedicated to Mariamman at Punnai Nallur, six miles from Tanjore. The Mariamman Temple was constructed by Marathi ruler Tuljaji in 1677 AD.

Virutcha Vanam

There is a large tree sanctuary close to the city in the Thanjavur district, near Vallam, Tirumalaisamutram area. It is kept up and maintained. “Virutcha Vanam” is the name of the sanctuary for these trees. A popular tourist destination is the sanctuary. 500 seedlings of 216 varieties, including Rudraksam, Karuvali, Tiruvodu, Itdi, Sivagundalam, Athi, Edi, and Mavilangai, were planted in this.

Furthermore, this tree sanctuary is used for the rearing of Bunganur bulls and cows. Worldwide, two breeds of chicken are bred: the larger Collodi bramus and the smaller Malaysian Sarama. Under the integrated farm scheme, a fish farm and a vegetable garden are being implemented with excellent maintenance. Production of mushrooms is also done.

Food Museum

The FCI selected Thanjavur as the birthplace of India’s first Food Museum due to its historical significance. Food Corporation of India (FCI) originated in part in Thanjavur, the cultural capital of the state, where the company opened its first office on January 14, 1965. On the premises of the FCI Divisional Office at Nirmala Nagar, Thanjavur, the Museum was constructed. This location serves as the Food Museum of India, which was founded 56 years ago to honor the FCI’s contribution to national food security.The Food Museum features a variety of subjects in addition to the agricultural revolution and development of the nation’s agricultural food practices from reliance on outside sources to self-sufficiency.
